“$26.5 billion dollars — cold, hard cash. For what? To repair the damage I’m about to inflict. Get your checkbook out, America, but leave the dollar amount blank. This might take a while. I’m a come-and-go kind of girl. I’ll come and see how you livin’, make certain you feel my presence in the most profound way — and then I’m gone, just like that. That’s how I’m cut.”

About the Book

The Story

Hurricane Katrina doesn’t just flood the Ninth Ward — she drags Sandra “Jewel” Landau out of New Orleans and into a family reunion nobody was ready for. Jewel arrives in Houston with nothing but a damp napkin address and fifteen years of silence between herself and her mother Francine, who fled south years ago with two young grandsons to bury the family’s secrets and give them a fair shot.

Fatso and Prince — those grandsons, now young men running their own code in South Park — pick the lock on Grandma’s attic and find Jewel’s confiscated Book of Ju-Ju. Fatso, book-smart and chemistry-minded, reads deep enough to extract a formula. They rebrand what they brew Ball — a powerful aphrodisiac — and with South Park crime boss Warren Lee’s blessing, the Houston Ball Club is open for business.

Meanwhile, Winnie Marshon walks out of a flooded jail cell a free man. Jewel witnessed Winnie commit an atrocity at the Superdome and cursed him a violent death. Both are bound for Houston. She’s already there.

Winnie muscles in on the Ball trade, steals the Book, burns the Landau house to the ground with Francine inside — and laces the formula with heroin. He calls it Hardball. The street war that ignites is not just business. It’s a blood vendetta. Jewel, voodoo practitioner and flood survivor, is now directing her nephews in the strategy of war.

Boys will become Men.

Know Who’s
In the City

Every creator adapting a chapter needs to know these people deeply. These dossiers are your source material — study them before you film.

She walked out of the Ninth Ward with nothing but a napkin address and fifteen years of silence. Jewel is a voodoo practitioner who witnessed Winnie Marshon’s atrocity at the Superdome and cursed him a violent death. Now she’s in Houston — keeper of the family’s real history — and she’s directing the war.

Survivor · Strategist

She fled New Orleans fifteen years ago to bury the family’s secrets and give her grandsons a fair shot at life. She built a careful world in South Park — deliberately, without Jewel. She hid the sacred box in the attic. When Winnie burns the house, he takes everything she sacrificed to protect.

The Matriarch · Keeper of Secrets

The older grandson. Book-smart, longs to be a chemist, holds his people down without conditions. He reads the Book of Ju-Ju deep enough to crack the formula and creates Ball. What he builds with Prince will define who they become — or undo them.

The Chemist · Older Brother

The younger grandson. Mischievous, conniving, street-smart. In love with Tamara. He’s always known there’s a locked door in his grandmother’s past — and he’s done pretending it isn’t there. It’s Prince who picks the lock. His brother calls it soft to ask questions. Prince calls it necessary.

The Thinker · Younger Brother

Career criminal. He was in jail when Katrina made landfall — the flood set him free. Jewel witnessed his atrocity at the Superdome and cursed him. He steals the Book of Ju-Ju, burns the Landau house with Francine inside, and laces the formula with heroin to create Hardball. He is not just the enemy — he is the reason the war has no ceiling.

Antagonist · The Wicked

Warren Lee — Head of the D Boys. South Park’s crime boss. His blessing is what turns Fatso and Prince’s Houston Ball Club from a side hustle into an operation — but make no mistake, the D Boys are his crew. He moves in the background, but nothing moves without him.

Tamara — Neighborhood girl. Prince’s crush. The anchor of his heart in the middle of a war that has no room for it.
